Party!

Last night was Unwind Yarn’s anniversary party and what a party it was! The place was packed with Ravelers and revelers. Ravelry came, and I always enjoy talking to Casey about the site and techie stuff. Jess is pregnant and so cute! I met Mary Heather and Sarah.Ravelry @ Unwind They brought Ysolda Teague. She is very sweet. She was wearing a sweater that she designed for her new book, Little Red In The City, which will be available in March. I love her design sensibility. A couple of us were examining the side seams on her sweater. I think she’s a knitting genius.

Shannon Okey was there signing her new book, The Knitgrrl Guide To Professional Knitwear Design. It looks like a great resource. She has provided tons of information and advice for a budding knitwear designer.  It was her birthday yesterday, so the shop got her a cake from Porto’s.

Michelle Miller from Fickle Knitter was there displaying her designs and patterns. I talked to her for quite a while about design and publishing patterns. She was very open and willing to give advice too. She designed the shawl I just completed as a display piece for the party and to show off the Silky Alpaca Lace from Classic Elite. Here’s a link to her blog post on the party.

Bar-Maids was there demoing their scrub and moisturizer. I had to get some for my Very. Dry. Hands. I think it’s just what I’ve been looking for. Smells divine too!

Classic Elite had their trunk show (is that what you call it? ) with the new Spring 2011 designs and yarns. It seems like we were the first to see them. The patterns are not even published yet, but I have my eye on a cute little cardigan in Cricket. It’s so new I can’t even find it on their website. They are releasing the new yarns at TNNA today, so I expect it will be there soon. Of course I forgot to take a picture. :(

By the way, my picture taking sux. I’m too shy about asking people to take their picture so I get very candid shots and bad angles and forget to take some important stuff. Then I get home and go, “Why didn’t I get that picture?!?” Sigh. The cardi I’m talking about is the second from the right. Next to the green sweater. Sorry, I only got the back. Ugghhh.

Ok, I have a confession. I think I’m addicted to yarn. It’s like a drug. I mean really. When Stephanie announced that there were a few seats left in Shanon Okey’s Hand Dyeing class on Sunday, I jumped right on it. I know I’ve seen emails about this, but being there I got all caught up in the excitement. How silly I am. Earlier in the evening I was telling Jim, the Classic Elite rep, that I was afraid to get into dyeing because I might become obsessed. Am I weird? Yah, a little yarn obsessed.

I’ll be back there tonight to hang with some of my new friends and get to know them better over some wine and knitting.

Next time I’ll show you pictures of the Not-So-Alpaca Baby Shawl. I stand corrected. I’m making it in a superwash merino. Duh! I kept insisting that it was Alpaca because that’s the title of the pattern I’m making. Sheesh!

I’ll let you know how the dyeing class goes and whether I’ve got a new obsession.

See you next Friday!

Happy New Year!

I know, it is January 5th already, and I’ve neglected to post since November. I could say that I’ve been real busy, but haven’t we all? No excuse, but I seem to have that one all the time. So….

My new year’s resolutions for 2011 are:

Post to blog once a week. Maybe I need a specific day? Mmm, I’ll pick Friday. ‘K.

Write 6 new patterns. (I’ve got a couple in my head and notebooks. Time to get them out there!)

Promote my web biz. What web biz you ask? The one that’s been in my head and all the books I keep buying.

Knit every day. Uh, is that a goal? I sort of do that now.

Invest 15% for retirement – CONSISTENTLY!!!

Give beyond the regular church tithe, to outside charities – REGULARLY!!! I mean monthly. (You have to be specific with these goal things. Otherwise they flit around with a mind of their own.)

Study Web design DAILY.

Bible study daily.

Study guitar DAILY.

Save for a home on the Central Coast.

Travel to exotic places once a year.

Go to NM & CO to see where my Great-Great Grandparents lived.

Follow FlyLady’s recommendations DAILY!!!

I know there’s more, but that’s all I can think of right now. There I’ve written them down!

KNITTING PROGRESS -

I finished the Simple Triangle Shawl for Unwind’s Ravelry event. It’s this Thursday. I can’t wait! I was telling DH about it last night and he wishes he could be here to go to the party! I don’t know if he would really have fun, but it was so cool that he is excited for me to be succeeding.

I should expound on how much I love the Silky Alpaca Lace from Classic Elite. I do, I really do. It is very easy to work with and never splits. I got this whole shawl from 1 ball! Can you belive it? This stuff just goes on forever! There are 440 yards per 50 gr ball. 70% alpaca, 30% silk. Mmmmmm.

I also made a scarf from the brown colorway and some fingerless gloves for a Christmas gift. I’ll post those pictures another time. (I think I have enough left to make myself a pair of fingerless gloves.) :)

I’m now working on Alpaca Baby Shawl in True Love Fiber Merino Superwash.Alpaca Baby Shawl Pattern Here’s True Love’s Etsy Store – Yummmm! I love how squishy this yarn is. I’m working with Sorbet which is a yellow and peachy/pink variegated and peach. It is coming out quite nicely if I say so myself. Pics to follow.

Since I will be posting Friday, I’ll tell you all about the Ravelry Party @ Unwind!

Till next time,

Ravelry Party at Unwind!

2010

On Thursday I went to the Ravelry meetup at Unwind Yarn. I wish I had some pics, but I didn’t even think to bring a camera. D’uoh! It was really fun. I got to meet Casey and Jess, and talked to Casey for a while about programming. He’s very cute and kind of shy. Go figure, a shy programmer?!

The place was packed when I got there around 7pm. I didn’t know anyone there except Stephanie. I was hoping I’d run into a friend, but I guess I should have brought one. My brain just doesn’t work that way.

After a while I decided that I just wanted to sit and knit so I took out my RSS (Really Simple Socks). Here’s a pic of the leg. It’s a little hard to see the detail. Right now I’m at the point of starting the heel. These socks are my own design with a little help from a pair of store bought socks that I’ve had for years. I’ve been looking at them since I picked up knitting again and I’ve been wanting to try the pattern. Well, they are finally wearing through the heel, so I thought I’d give it a go. These are one repeat shy of the store bought ones. The yarn they use is much thinner.

Designing is a goal I have for myself this year. This is the first project, other than the Sky Wrap Scarf that I designed quite by accident. By the way, I have uncovered the directions for the original Wrap/Scarf that I thought just couldn’t be what I saw at the store. Attached were directions from the web that I used as a start, but even they are not what I ended up with. I will write up what I did. I remember most of it, but I’ll have to make a sample just to be sure.

Back at the Ravelry party, as soon as I whipped out my socks, I got lots of comments and compliments. I talked to Laura, tinkknitter on Ravelry who I hadn’t seen for a long time. She works at Unwind sometimes. I met Lucky Penny who I can’t find on Ravelry right now, and a couple of gals from a church across town. One of the women was really outgoing and saw that I was knitting two socks on two circulars. She was intrigued by this and asked if she could watch because she had always wanted to try it. Her friend is a crocheter that she’s trying to convert into a knitter. As we talked we discovered that we know some people in common. The choir director at our church used to give lessons to their kids and a woman that started the walking group at our church are friends of theirs. Small world, huh?

After the crowds thinned out I was able to move around and bought this beautiful shawl pin and these yarns. I’m trying out the wrap again in this Tough Love sock yarn from sweetgeorgia. The color is just gorgeous! I’m not sure it wants to be the wrap though. I think it may be calling out to be Pomatomus. The colors remind me of a beautiful Hawaiian ocean, crystal clear water and the scales of a fish. We’ll see…

I’m not sure why I bought the Manos de Uruguay except that I kept picking up the skein. It’s so soft, and the colors… Alright, you got me. I bought it because it was love at first sight. I don’t know what I will make with 175 yards yet. They only had the one skein because it is a prototype. I think it might be a spring scarf of some sort.

The shawl pin was complete impulse. Ummm, weren’t the yarns too? Anyway, I needed a shawl pin. I have a wooden one, but I never wear it because it needs finishing.

So silly of me. I was telling the ladies that I was trying to use up my stash yarn before buying any more. That was before I saw these wonderful yarns. Also, the entry fee to the party was to be used toward any purchase made that night. I couldn’t let that go, could I? ;)

I just finished Josie’s baby blanket.

I bound off using a size 7 needle and the 6th bind off on this page: http://weebleknits.blogspot.com/2003/05/stretchy-bind-offs.html

I want to keep this handy because I keep referring back to it. I hope someday I’ll remember how to do this automatically. The easiest thing is to just use larger needles.

My daughter didn’t want traditional pink or yellow. She chose purple for her new little girl. This yarn has a pearly white strand running through it that adds a bit of “glitz.” I think she’ll like it.

I finally got the invitations to the shower mailed.

I had forgotten that Monday was a postman’s holiday. Hopefully everyone will forgive me that I asked them to RSVP so quickly. It’s ok, in all we have invited about 60 guests. If the laws of invites hold true, 75% of them will come and that leaves us with about 45. Now to figure out the food. Do I make it myself or buy pre-made? I’m being a little Martha Stewart-y about all this. I have to count tables and chairs and tea cups. I’ll probably end up buying paper ones. I wish they were shaped like tea cups rather than coffee cups. Other than that I hope it doesn’t rain. It would be nice to do this in the backyard. Martha would have a conniption

about my back yard though. Maybe she would get up early in the morning to plant petunias!
